Must See Movie Releases of the Week

The second week of April offers some intriguing movie picks. From drama to fantasy, there is something for your movie taste. These are the must see releases for Blu-ray/DVD, VOD and special theatrical releases of the week:

MOLLY’S GAME:

Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba light up the screen with their superb performances. Chastain plays Molly Bloom. A premiere skier turned high-stakes poker game runner. It’s based on a true story. Aaron Sorkin crafts a compelling and fascinating story that exposes the dangers and excitement of the highly exclusive world of underground poker. I loved the guessing game of who were some of the celebrities involved in these poker games. It’s fun, because Sorkin gives some hints, but it’s up to you to figure out who some of these characters are.

It’s a shame this movie didn’t get Oscar nominations, it was that good. Bloom is a difficult character to play. She has this inner conflict she’s battling, but also projects outward strength and establishes authority in a male dominated activity. Chastain plays Bloom in a way that makes you feel for her. All around great presentation and strong acting that supports a highly intriguing plot.

Must See Home Blu-ray Movie Releases of the Week (April 3)

The start of April kicks things into high gear. This weeks home movie releases offer a hilarious comedy, a chilling horror and a compelling Netflix series. Don’t miss this weeks top picks:

FATHER FIGURES:

Owen Wilson and Ed Helms are looking for their father. Now that’s a premise that’s sure to entertain, and it does. Wilson and Helms play two adult brothers that are searching for their father after being mislead all their lives. Among the choices, Terry Bradshaw (playing himself), Ving Rhames, J.K. Simmons and Christopher Walken. Come on, you can’t assemble a better daddy list than that, that’s quality. Fortunately it all comes together great, this great mix of actors really let loose and have fun on-screen.

This is an over-the-top, outrageous, raunchy comedy that you’d expect from Helms and Wilson coming together. There is a bunch of funny antics and one-liners that will keep you engaged and laughing. I found it to be ridiculously fun. It’s one of these underrated comedies that flew under-the-radar. Look out for the beach scene where Bradshaw, Helms and Wilson toss around a football and get Rhymes gives them the lowdown on their mother, it’s hilarious. Great cast, timely comedy and outlandishly entertaining plot and characters make Father Figures one of the prime must see films of the week.

Must See Blu-ray Releases Of The Week (March 27)

The last week of March offers a variety of movie choices for various genres and interests. A big name headliner film and some smaller lesser known solid movies.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI:

We all asked for more Luke Skywalker and in The Last Jedi we get him! Where The Force Awakens focused on Rey and Fin, we only got a brief glimpse of Luke, but not this time around. The Last Jedi leaves off the events of Force Awakens and we see the fallout of Rey’s encounter with Luke. He’s living a peaceful existence but Rey wants to bring him back to the fold and reunite him with Princess Leia. There are multiple interesting storylines taking place in the film and relationships explored. The most intriguing one being that between Rey and Kylo Ren.

The same great special effects and action is in the film that you’ve gotten used to from Star Wars. It’s surreal to see the past, present and future characters of the franchise uniting in The Last Jedi. It’s almost like an all-star squad of Star Wars greats. Last Jedi is fun, exciting and satisfactory. It’s a must-see, especially to see Luke’s fate decided.

Must See Movie Releases Of The Week

The last week of January leads into February on this week’s must see movie release calendar. This week’s Blu-ray, DVD, VOD and theatrical releases offer some under-the-radar surprises.

LAST FLAG FLYING:

Forget anything about Steve Carell being a comedic actor, after yet another terrific dramatic performance from him alongside the equally fantastic Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne in Last Flag Flying. The film is about three friends reuniting 30 years after serving together in Vietnam in support of one of their sons being killed in the Iraq War. As mentioned, a great ensemble of top-notch actors directed by a top-notch storyteller in Richard Linklater. The subject matter of the movie is heavy, but there is a good amount of comedy that lightens the mood. Just seeing these three actors together is reason enough to check out this film, but the story of friendship and kinship will give you the feels also.

BLU-RAY / DVD / DIGITAL SPECIAL FEATURES

  • “An Unexpected Journey: Making Last Flag Flying” Featurette
  • “Veterans Day” Featurette
  • Outtakes

Two Must-See Movie Releases This Week

As the week winds down, what movies should you catch up on this weekend? Luckily, there are some good choices for Blu-ray, DVD, Digital and VOD this week. Check these two under-the-radar picks in particular:

JIGSAW:

Just when you thought he was gone for good, back comes Jigsaw to terrify and torture poor souls. When investigators uncover a string of gruesome bodies, it leads them to believe that Jigsaw or a copycat of him is out on the loose again. Ten years after the demise of Jigsaw and 8 years since the last Saw movie, the franchise is back and looks refreshed and ready to go for another round of movies.

The Saw franchise can be considered one of the finest horror franchises in the last couple decades, but with multiple films spewing out on a yearly basis (around Halloween), it became stale. This version brings back the flare that the last few movies were missing. It goes back to the slick mind puzzles, while providing genuine intrigue and tension. Jigsaw is believably creepy, and that’s what was needed for this film to work. Is Jigsaw alive? You’ll enjoy the ride in finding that out.

Must See Movies of the Week (12/19)

It’s Christmas week! Many of you are running out and getting last minute presents. Well I’m here to help out. Here are this weeks must-see movie recommendations that would also be ideal stocking stuffer gifts. This week’s movie pics offer a nice variety of selections.

DUNKIRK:

After a few years away from the big screen, director Christopher Nolan returned with the jaw-dropping war epic, Dunkirk. The World War II battle of Dunkirk didn’t get much mention mainstream (at least in America) as a significant event, but this movie is certain to give you a new perspective and education. The way Nolan encapsulated the scale and magnitude of this event is remarkable. The visuals are top-notch. The terrific ensemble of actors includes the vastly underrated Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, along with a surprise debut from singer Harry Styles, whose actually alright in the movie.

There is a lot that this movie offers. Spectacular sights, incredible storytelling, fantastic directing and good acting. The score is also to behold. There is no reason not to see Dunkirk, which will be a frontrunner in many categories during awards season, certainly to include a Best Picture nomination.

Find out why Dunkirk would be a perfect stocking stuffer gift
