THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR:
One of my favorite romantic movies of the year is The Sun is Also a Star. Two college-aged teens have a chance encounter that changed their fate and their immediate lives forever. This is a true story of two hopeless romantics (one much more aware of that fact than the other), filled with some hopeful ideas. This is a unique modern love story with some real life obstacles that the characters are forced to face.
I really liked the fact that we get diverse actors and characters, illustrating two different cultural backgrounds. Yara Shahidi plays Natasha, a poised, NYC street smart young lady who comes from a tight-knit immigrant family that’s about to be deported back to Jamaica. Charles Melton plays Daniel, a future med student that comes from a immigrant Asian family whose hope is that Daniel’s future career can change their family fortunes. Both characters and their families are relatable, especially if you come from an immigrant family.
I loved the modern approach to this story. Young love that has a lot at stake in their personal and family lives. There are some fantastic genuine moments of humor and romance. There is certainly a place today for romantic movies and The Sun is Also a Star proves that you can make them fresh and relatable. One of the most underrated must-see movies of the year.
