THE EXCEPTION:
This film pleasantly surprised me. Lily James has been quite the face of war dramas (War & Peace) and period pieces. She fits perfectly in this one. James plays a Jewish-Dutch maid to a Dutch Keiser Wilhelm (Christopher Plummer), who is being investigated by a German soldier (Jai Courtney). So the German soldier falls for the Jewish maid on the brink of WWII. This is a love story as much as it is a war drama. There are moments of tension in the story that work nicely. Plummer is terrific. James and Courtney have nice chemistry. The film has a compelling plot and solid acting. It’s worth a shot for sure.
