Most likely, Gary Oldman will be leaving home with an Oscar Sunday night. It’s all due to his stellar performance in Darkest Hour. Oldman plays the legendary British Prime Minster Winston Churchill. The films plot revolves around Churchill debating between working a deal with Hitler or fight against him. Ironically, the Battle of Dunkirk is the focal point in the movie and this film is also nominated for Best Picture alongside Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. Finally Dunkirk gets it’s story told properly from two perspectives.
Back to Darkest Hour. It’s such a significant historical story and characters. Oldman is virtually unrecognizable as Churchill, with his complete physical and emotional transformation. It’s amazing. You see the various shades of Churchill’s persona, the wild and borderline wacky and the stern and authoritative. This film is not only a master class in performance from Oldman, but it’s compelling and interesting. It’s the best portrayal of Churchill to date, and the movie plot delivers also. Another Oscar favorite to be on a must-see list.
DARKEST HOURis out now on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital and On Demand
