Must See Movie Pick of the Week: Uncut Gems
Leave it up to Benny and Josh Safdie to bring out the best performance from Adam Sandler. The crime thriller is one of the best movies of 2019. Unfortunately it didn’t get all the awards consideration (aside from Spirit Awards) that it deserved, especially for Sandler.
The film stars Sandler as a NYC street-wise jeweler, Howard Ratner, that finds himself in trouble with collectors, so he risks it all in order to survive. This is an tension packed plot that kept me on edge. It has a high-stakes feel and a tone of uncomfortable uncertainty that I felt for Sandler’s character. It has a gritty streetwise plot with some twists.
Aside from the compelling thrill ride that Safdie’s and Ronald Bronstein take you on, the performance from Sandler is special. It’s unlike the version of Sandler you’ve ever seen. It’s dramatic and intense. Oscar worthy kind.
There is a lot to like about Uncut Gems. It’s a seriously well crafted film with a plot that doesn’t let up. I urge you to check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
