I’m usually not the biggest fan of fantasy adventure films, but this one is different. Madison Wolfe plays teen Barbara Thorson, who defends her small town from giant monsters. Zoe Saldana plays Barbara’s school counselor and a mentor of sorts. This movie doesn’t boil down to monsters vs humans, it’s a story of courage, friendships and love. The characters relationships in the movie are the key to it all.
The character of Barbara is fairly self-aware for her age and understanding of the choices she makes, coming to terms with her own self and facing her fears. That can be a significant takeaway for younger viewers. I appreciated the fact that the film kept things simple and didn’t overdo the special effects. It’s as solid of a graphic novel to big screen treatment you can hope for. Don’t be swayed that it’s a young adult novel, therefore it only appeals to teens, not the case with this movie.
I KILL GIANTSis out now in select theaters, On Demand and Digital HD
