This is a heck of a crime thriller. Not only the best of this week, but of the month. The plot revolves around gangster that’s released from prison, but forced to commit a crime with a rival gang once he’s back out on the streets. This is an edgy and gritty film from writer/director Ric Roman Waugh. The storytelling feels raw and authentic. It sort of puts you behind the scenes of a prison inmate society and presents a whole new perspective on what goes on there. The performances are excellent, lead by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who is terrific as the the prison head gangster Money. Supporting performances from Lake Bell, Jon Bernthal, Emory Cohen, among others, are on point. The film just projects this intensity and intimidation that will be felt while watching. I was invested throughout. If you’re looking for a gripping crime drama, then look no further than Shot Caller.
