2040:

What will the world look like 20 years from now? That’s a broad and important question that we don’t have answers to. The past few decades have seen unprecedented changes in weather and the rise of natural disasters. Things are changing swiftly, but is there anything we can do about it to stop or slow it down?

Enter Australian filmmaker Damon Gameau. 2040 takes a look at what the future could look like while embracing possible solutions. Many docs of similar nature tend to focus on the chaos and the doomsday that is upon us in relation to our environment. Gameau structures the film to as a hope and wish for changes that his 4-year-old daughter can experience when she turns 21, in 2040.

Gameau blends visual effect sequences to illustrate the visions of a more promising future and depicting the current state. It’s an imaginative and hopeful look into our future. I really liked the storytelling aspect and the message he provides. Including his daughter in the story makes it even more personal and relatable. I appreciated that there was a positive outlook this film provides of a future that we are still in control of.

‘2040’ is opening in virtual theaters nationally June 5, 2020
