Ellar Coltrane literally grew up on camera. The star of Richard Linklater’s Oscar nominated Boyhood is now all grow up and carving his own path in the industry. His latest film, Shoplifters of the World, tells the story of how the break-up of a British band called the The Smiths impacted a group of friends for one unforgettable infamous night.

I spoke to Ellar about his role in Shoplifters of the World. He talked about his move to New Mexico and his interest in learning carpentry. He also spoke about his Boyhood experience and not achieving stardom.

REAL TALK:

This was my first interaction with Ellar and I was really impressed with him. Just seemed like a genuine nice guy. Easy to talk to. Very down-to-earth. You can tell he didn’t grow up in Hollywood.

I think he’s a really good actor, but had no idea he lived simple and modestly. You’d imagine someone of his caliber with his success would be living in some fancy place or LA, but he just moved to New Mexico. I think that’s pretty cool and refreshing.

I learned a lot about Ellar in this interview. I found it very interesting that he has a real interest in carpentry. Just working with hands in general. He builds a heck of a shelf also! Looks like he has a lot of talent in building things.

Boyhood was a groundbreaking film and Ellar was at the center of it. He had some interesting things to say about his experience on it, and was also very complimentary of Ethan Hawke and what he learned from him.

My question to Ellar about not achieving stardom after Boyhood could be one of those uncomfortable questions for someone to answer, but I give him a lot of credit for answering it truthfully and honestly. I found him to be very transparent and introspective in his answers. Says a lot about him as a person.

Check out his work in Shoplifters of the World, I thought he was really good in it. He also really transformed his look for the film.
