Apple TV+ Dark Matter is one of the best shows going right now. The mind-bending series from author and show creator Blake Crouch, stars A-listers Jennifer Connelly and Joel Edgerton. I spoke with the stars of the show, Blake Crouch and producer Matt Tolmach.
Some of the topics of conversation, aside from the show, the origins of the Chicago setting, Requiem for a Dream and yes, even Kraven the Hunter! Check it all out below:
JENNIFER CONNELLY (“Daniela Dessen”):
When you speak with Jennifer Connelly, it feels like you’re talking to a big star, which is exactly what she is. She has this aura about her that’s unique. I found her to be thoughtful in her answers. It was fun to hear that she enjoyed her experience making Requiem for a Dream, which is a memorable film.
Jennifer is eloquent and classy and just a big star and it was pretty awesome to get to speak with her. As expected, she’s great on the show.
JOEL EDGERTON (“Jason Dessen”) & ALICE BRAGA (“Amanda Lucas”):
Been a big fan of Joel Edgerton for a while. This was a lot of fun. Alicia has been one of the more underrated top-tier actresses for a while, so it’s cool to seem them work together on this show. Joel really went deep into his character. He spoke very eloquently about “Jason Dessen” and his motivations.
Obviously my favorite part was getting Joel and Alice to crack up when I spoke about how lucky Joel/Jason are to have Jennifer Connelly and Alice Braga as love interests on the show. It was a great reaction by Joel, who just dropped his head while Alice laughed out loud.
Alice and Joel was nice and engaging. Very smart actors. I enjoyed connecting with both of them. Pretty cool moment for me, as I’ve been a big fan of both actors.
BLAKE CROUCH (Creator) & MATT TOLMACH (Producer):
Mystery solved. Blake revealed why the setting of the story in Dark Matter takes place in Logan Square in Chicago (yes, it’s a real neighborhood). That’s where he first began to write the novel at, so it was a homage. Pretty damn cool, especially for a Chicagoan like myself to see the city and the Logan Square neighborhood represented in a major TV show.
Another confirmation was attained when I got Matt to confirm the final release date of Kraven the Hunter. No more pushbacks! Ha. Matt has been one of the main people behind most of Sony’s Marvel movies. Both Matt and Blake seemed like fun, chill guys. I enjoyed speaking with them.
JIMMI SIMPSON (“Ryan Holder”):
How fun was Jimmi? I enjoyed my chat with him. You can see and hear the passion he has for the show and what Blake Crouch created with the “Dark Matter” novel. Jimmi’s character “Ryan Holder” is a lot of fun on the show. Jimmy found the show to be transformational for him personally, which is a testament to what Blake created and Jimmi’s connection to it.
DARK MATTER all nine-episodes will premiere globally on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes. New episodes will debut weekly, every Wednesday through June 26, 2024
