Imagine growing up with your sibling and being silly kids and then forward years later as adults you are making feature films with movie stars like Mel Gibson and Orlando Bloom. That’s the story of the Nelms, brothers Ian and Eshom.
I spoke to Ian and Eshom Nelms about their latest film Red Right Hand. The film stars Orlando Bloom and Andie MacDowell. The dramatic thriller is tension packed with some memorable character performances. The guys talked about those performances, working together, making independent films and some questionable marketing of the film.
REAL TALK:
So first and foremost thanks to Ian and Eshom for this interview. We recorded an interview previously, but there was an issue with the file that ended up being corrupted and they were gracious with their time to redo the interview again. Class act guys. Got my respect.
In a way I was fortunate to get to speak with them again. Got some more new nuggets and their reaction to the release of the film, which wasn’t released yet when we did the first interview. I appreciate their transparency about their surprise and disappointment with how the film was marketed and promoted. They wanted the focus to be on the story and characters, not as much as the action. Now, there is definitely action in the film, but there is a family story at its core, and I feel like the guys wanted that to be the main emphasis.
Both times we spoke about the character turns by Andie MacDowell and Orlando Bloom. The guys spoke glowingly of both actors and their commitment. Andie’s characters is a complete ruthless badass, a role I’ve never seen her do, and she did it very well. The Nelms spoke about Orlando Bloom’s commitment as an actor and how he wanted to do a film and character of this time, more rugged and gritty, a far removal from his pretty boy and fun loving characters like in Pirates of the Caribbean. He’s also excellent in the role. This film has a lot of high quality notable actors in supporting roles, from Scott Haze to Brian Geraghty. Not to mention a rock solid performance from young actress Chapel Oaks, who in many ways is the glue of the film.
There is so much good stuff the guys touched on, I can write pages about. I appreciated them sharing their perspectives and insight into independent movie making. The lessons they learned and mistakes made, as well as triumphs. Also, big news nugget was them revealing they are working on Fatman 2. So that should be something to look forward to from them.
Great guys. Talent filmmakers. Just genuine real dudes. That’s what I think of the Nelms brothers. They were easy to connect with and have a great conversation. Looking forward to their continued work. I do recommend Red Right Hand. I found it entertaining and well done, with very good performances and directing.
RED RIGHT HAND will be in select theaters and on digital February 23rd
