A blockbuster that sent shockwaves across the NFL today. It’s not April Fools, but it’s June 1st and the Los Angeles Rams just acquired one of the best players in football in Cleveland Browns megastar Myles Garrett. June is the dead season of the NFL, but not for Sean McVay and Les Snead, who once again said “F*** them picks” and surrendered star pass rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick to Cleveland in the deal.
In return the Rams get themselves a bonafide superstar and reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. This is as all-in as you can get, if you’re the Rams. Garrett is a game-changer. This is the kind of move you make to win now, and Rams are most definitely as win-now of a team in the NFL, as there is.
Yes, you get arguably the best defensive player in the league, but you are giving up a hefty price for him. So how does this deal look like now and in future?
Pros:
- Best defensive player in the league a game-changer and final piece to make a Super Bowl run
- Garrett is signed for 3 more years
- Immediately raises level of your defense and makes it one of the top units in the NFL
- Bringing a leader in his prime and coming off a record setting season
- Takes pressure off his teammates
Cons:
- Giving up 25 year old Jared Verse
- Draft picks given up in next three drafts
- Short window to win?
Ok, let me elaborate on some of this. The Rams were thinking ahead prior to making this deal Now we can see why the drafting of QB Ty Simpson makes a big difference. The Rams were okay giving up the draft picks, because they believe they just drafted the heir apparent to Matthew Stafford. Now, if Simpson doesn’t work out, that’s another issue for another time. So technically the picks given up won’t matter. The Rams have no expectation of this pick being anywhere in the the top 25, so it’s going to be a late round 1st if their season goes as expected.
The Rams aren’t in a market for a young QB anymore with the Simpson draft pick already completed. So F-them picks really does apply to this trade. The toughest pill to swallow was giving up Jared Verse, a former Defensive Rookie of the Year and a player who netted you 12 sacks and 22 tackles last season. This is the price of doing business. To get a superstar, you need to give up significant talent in return.
There is no reason to believe that Garrett will decline and not match his expectations. Sure, maybe he won’t set another sack record, but he’s coming to a much more talented team and defense, that was revamped this offseason, prior to his arrival. This will be the best defensive unit he’s played with. At worst, Garrett will be good for 15 sacks, pencil it in, but expect more. There shouldn’t be any Rams fan that complains if he maxes out at 20 sacks.
Overall, this is a massive get for the Rams. They will be the clear favorites with Garrett to win the Super Bowl, the game which will be played on their home turn in SoFi. The expectations are sky-high now, but clearly this all-in move signals the Rams are ready to hoist the Lombardi in Los Angeles come February. Rams fans, get ready for a fun ride this season.
