The first month of fall has always been a barometer for where the movie season is heading, and September 2025 proved it again. This month’s movie trailers drop has been all about showing less to build more buzz. Studios have discovered that scarcity generates more excitement than saturation ever could, especially in an oversaturated content world.

From Paul Thomas Anderson’s mystery project to horror franchise juggernauts, September’s biggest titles have harnessed restraint, saving their most impactful reveals for maximum cultural impact.

Let’s break down the early fall trailer buzz, the teaser speculation that followed, and what September 2025 teases.

One Battle After Another – September 26

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Alana Haim
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Anderson’s action thriller had its world premiere in Los Angeles on September 8 and is scheduled for theatrical release on September 26. The footage available shows DiCaprio in what appears to be a 1970s-set story with Anderson’s signature ensemble cast and period detail work. Loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, the plot remains largely under wraps despite early screenings. The film’s marketing has relied on Anderson’s reputation and DiCaprio’s star power over snippets from the movie.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 – September 26

Cast: Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso
Director: Renny Harlin

The official trailer released June 23, 2025, amplifying Harlin’s return to classic home-invasion horror. It features Madelaine Petsch reprising her role and new cast members, with a focus on escalating the tension and worldbuilding set up by the previous film. The film opens September 26, matching Anderson’s project as one of the season’s tentpoles.  Lionsgate’s horror marketing leaned hard into influencer “reaction” shorts and behind-the-scenes sneak previews through late August and September, rather than classic TV spots or new surprise trailers.

The Toxic Avenger – August 29

Cast: Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige
Director: Macon Blair

September’s updated peek at the new Toxic Avenger shows a movie that gets why the original was so much fun while adding modern moviemaking skills. The footage mixes old-school practical effects with today’s production quality, creating something that feels both throwback and fresh. Peter Dinklage as the mutated hero proves this isn’t just nostalgia cash-grab — there’s real character work under all the crazy action. The environmental message from the original Troma classic stays sharp for 2025 audiences.

Speculation: Dune: Part III Teaser at NYCC?

New York Comic Con runs October 9-12, and Warner Bros. has been suspiciously quiet about its big presentations. Industry talk suggests Denis Villeneuve might debut the first Dune: Part III footage there, taking advantage of the convention’s hardcore fans and social media explosion potential. Both previous Dune movies used NYCC for major reveals, so the timing makes perfect sense. If it happens, expect footage focused on Paul’s continued journey after he killed Baron Harkonnen, defeated Feyd-Rautha, and forced the Emperor to abdicate.

Looking Ahead

September’s movie trailers knew exactly who they were talking to. Horror fans got what they came for, cinephiles got cryptic setups, and everyone else got a taste without a spoiler dump. With Dune: Part III rumors looming and Halloween titles ramping up, the rest of fall looks ready to match — if not top — the momentum.
