Huge news recently with the Chicago Fire FC and team owner Joe Mansueto announcing a new stadium for the team. Coming in 2028 the Fire will add another new neighborhood to Chicago, “The 78”. A development site that will house the Chicago Fire stadium, located in the South Loop and just half a mile from Lake Michigan.
The biggest part of this all is that Mr. Mansueto is paying the bill, the stadium will be privately funded. That’s monumental. It’s been estimated the stadium will cost 600+ million. It will be a multipurpose stadium, while a primary home for the Fire, it will be a year-round venue for concerts and events. The venue capacity for Fire games will be 22,000, can be expanded to more for other events.
The team released the highly anticipated picture renderings of the new stadium and surrounding area.
I’ve been a huge fan of Mr. Mansueto from the day I met him. Just a humble, kind and genuine individual that deeply cares for the Chicago Fire and the community, and has a real love for the city of Chicago. This is why I’m not surprised he decided to fun the stadium privately. Kudos to him for doing that, very few owners in any sports would make that commitment.
Here is a closer look at the dimensions breakdown and sections of the stadium.
It will be two and a half seasons before the Fire step foot into their new palace. The team is moving in the right direction and could establish themselves as a force in the MLS by the time they introduce the stadium.
The stadium isn’t overly fancy looking, but it looks like a real soccer-specific modern stadium. It still gets lakefront feel, the Chicago skyline is right in the view of the stadium, plus, it’s still in downtown. It addresses so many needs for the club. Finally a full-time home, not out of reach like Bridgeview. Not being chased out by the Chicago Bears. Close to the new practice facility. Check, check, check and check!
