Unsung Hero is a story we can all relate to in some way to. Based on the life of Grammy Award- winning musicians Joel Smallbone and Rebecca St. James, and their family. At its core it’s an inspirational film about family. Joel Smallbone plays his real-life father David Smallbone. Daisy Betts plays Joel’s mother and David’s wife, Helen Smallbone.

I spoke to Joel and Daisy about Unsung Hero. The meaning the film had to them. The inspirational messages that can be taken from them and the undying love and commitment of a mother, in this case, Helen Smallbone.

JOEL SMALLBONE:

Joel is a gem of a human. He’s so easy to root for and very happy for his success, some people just deserve it. He addressed me by my name every answer he gave, which was really nice, just to get treated with such grace and respect is something that’s much appreciated on my end. He was terrific playing his dad. Sure, he knows the source material better than anyone outside his family. He’s a very talented actor and showed range.

I wasn’t familiar with his family and his for King + Country prior to this film, but now having checked them out, I’m a fan. They are really good (Joel and his brother Luke). Check them out if you haven’t already. I do hope he brings a sequel of sorts about his rise to stardom. This movie clearly was a love letter to his parents, especially to his mom in particular.

DAISY BETTS:

I was vaguely familiar with Daisy’s work, I’ve seen her on Chicago Fire before. She’s a super talented actress and does a great job playing Helen Smallbone. She radiates lots of love, warmth and determination that through her portrayal of Helen.

Daisy is Australian, so this role fit perfectly for her. It’s interested how this script and role brought her back to acting, after a hiatus. It’s unique that she got to work alongside Joel, who’s parents and family this story depicts.

Daisy really seemed proud and honored to be a part of this film and playing the role of Helen. You can just tell in her responses and reactions, this meant a lot to her and the story inspired her also.

Unsung Hero is the perfect Mother’s Day film. So it’s timely. Well-acted, great story that’s inspirational. We need movies like this. It definitely had a personal feel to it, but something relatable to most.

UNSUNG HERO, opening in theaters nationwide on April 26th
