The Apple TV Sunday Night Soccer showcase returns to Dignity Health Sports Park for a western conference showdown between the LA Galaxy and the surprising Real Salt Lake. A crowd of nearly 20,000 showed up for Cobi Jones night, where his statue was unveiled earlier in the day at the stadium. Rightfully deserved for the face of this franchise since day one.

Galaxy pushing from the start and it didn’t take long as the Galaxy drew a foul right outside the top of the box. Marco Reus and Gabriel Pec stepped up, but who was going to take it? Pec teased a kick, but it was Reus who stepped up and curled one beautifully right into the top corner pocket. GOLAZO for Reus! RSL keeper Rafael Cabral didn’t even flinch. Either he didn’t see the ball or thought it sure was going off the mark.

Top class shows up, and Reus still proving he’s got moments of pure brilliance in him. Big early lead for LA inside of 10 minutes. It will be interesting to see the approach from Greg Vanney the rest of this half. Will he keep pushing or play back with the lead. It’s been a physical game.

Pec had a chance to put Galaxy up two goals, but misses a grounder a few feet wide of the near post. Real Salt Lake’s best opportunity came in the 35th when Victor Olatunji goes down right on the line of the box. A potential penalty, with a VAR check confirming NO penalty, to Pablo Mastroeni’s dismay. This looked like a case of a guy of Olatunji’s stature being a detriment. A smaller sized guy could have gotten the call.

Galaxy followed with two more serious goal opportunities, but lack of execution. Pec should have done better with an empty net. Same goes for Joseph Paintsil who missed a tap in front of the goal. Need to finish chances like these or they usually come back to haunt you later in the game.

Right before the half, disaster struck for LA. Aiden Hezarkhani had a slick possession on the left wing, with Glesnes all over him, pulling on his shirt. Hezarkhani finds and opening as Glesnes slips and crosses it to the right side to an unmarked Gozo who hits it off the post and ricochets off JT Marcinkowski’s back and past the goal line. Huge goal for Salt Lake. Own goal for LA. Bad twist of fate for the Galaxy, who let in the tying goal on the last play of the first half.

What should have been one of their best first half of the season, turned into one of the most disappointing ones. Realistically the Galaxy should be coming out of the halff with a 2 or 3 to goal lead. No way Vanney can be pleased with how things unfolded in the half.

Glesnes was substituted during the half. Have to wonder if it’s a minutes restriction, especially since it’s his first game back from injury, but hopefully not due to the slip at the end of the half. The second half urgency is not replicating that of the first half for LA. Looks like Real covered up some holes they had in the first half that LA was exploiting.

The second half it’s Salt Lake taking shots on goal, on target, but soft ones. Galaxy had a chance to respond in the 81st minute when Pec sent a far post shot that was tipped away by the diving Cabral. Fantastic save.

Moments later the Galaxy get a big break, where a clear pull of Elijah Wynder’s shirt in the box resulted in a penalty for LA. Reus steps up to take the PK and drills a cool, calm shot to the back of the left corner. Professional footballer doing top class things. Games like these is where you see Reus and his world class experience come to shine.

The Galaxy had to hold off the last gasp attack from RSL and showed that Cobi Jones grit in doing so. Galaxy pick up a crucial three points against a western conference foe that’s ahead of them in the standings.

This was a night for a true Galaxy legend and original, Cobi Jones. Galaxy put on a fantastic presentation for Jones and he will be immortalized in the Galaxy lore with a fantastic statue outside the stadium, alongside David Beckham and Landon Donovan. Great night for the Galaxy organization and fans.

Man of the Match:

This one is simple, Marco Reus! When they needed him the most, the world class footballer showed up. Two goals that were the reason for the win. The Galaxy will need more of these Reus heroics for the foreseeable future.
